WHAT WE DO:
Enhance Literacy. Provide STEM. Enrich Education.
Support and serve our communities in need.
Flexibility and responsiveness are critical elements for Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga to continue to move nimbly from in-class work with students to support during distance learning. We serve Campbell Union School District, Moreland School District and Luther Burbank School District. We continue our efforts to support new moms and their babies through the Nurse Family Partnership of Santa Clara County Public Health. Many of those we serve live in near poverty here in Silicon Valley.
Enhancing Literacy for Children
LiteracyBecause reading remains an essential element in development, this year students were presented with Art/Writing Kits. Instead of once a month classroom visits from volunteers who read aloud to students, the students were given books to take home and keep. Quality new and used books are also provided for the students’ classroom library.
TutoringPreparing for the future is critical and the goal to help students in Kindergarten and 1st grade do better in school continues. Each year volunteers visit classrooms twice a week during the school year to help students with their reading skills.

Providing STEM Education
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math)Students today must understand scientific thinking and engineering design to have the best options for success in today’s technological world. Without in-class learning, including discussions, and interactive projects, Campbell Union School District requested STEAM Kits for Kindergarten through 5th graders to use at home during distance learning. A total of 34,000 individual science lessons were assembled for students. After a teacher introduction of a subject, the students had all the materials to tackle the hands on activity. A variety of explorations, including differentiating types of bird beaks and creating the model of an eye were provided for their in-home setting.
INQUIRY AND INNOVATION DAY
All 3rd graders in the Campbell Union School District were treated to a science lesson and experiment based on the easy-reader book Ada Lace on the Case to encourage a love of science and engineering.
ScholarshipPartial scholarships are offered to 5th and 6th grade students to help them attend local week-long Science Camps with their peers. These students have the opportunity, many for the first time, to explore the world of nature around them.

Enriching Childrens Education
Clothes for KidsA warm jacket or new shoes can make a difference for students who are struggling. Items provided included jackets, shoes, socks, sweatshirts and school uniforms at the request of school staff. Beginning this year, hygiene kits were distributed to middle school students. Volunteers shop and assemble individual packages to meet these requests.

Supporting New Moms and their BabiesIn cooperation with Nurse Family Partnership in Santa Clara County, those in-need moms and their new babies, as identified by the nurses, are provided with a bundle of baby items wrapped in a hand-made, colorful baby quilt. At the holidays, gifts are provided to babies and their siblings selected as most in need by the nurses.

Cooking for SeniorsIn partnership with the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center which serves the frail elderly of our community, teams of 3-4 volunteers each plan, shop, cook and serve approximately 100 warm and nutritious meals each week to seniors at the adult daycare center. We hope to resume this program as soon as we are able.
