STEM and Art/Writing Kits for Schools
Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga volunteers has been hard at work during August and September creating thousands of STEM Kits for students to work on at home as part of their distance learning this fall. 34,000 STEM Kits will be delivered to Campbell Union School District in early October. Each student in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be able to perform six science experiments to do at home after a distance learning science lesson from their teacher. Topics range from leaves changing color, difference in bird beaks, to friction and pattern of motion, and structure and function of the human eye.
In addition, 1500 Art/Writing Kits for Kindergarten through 2nd graders were also assembled by volunteers. These kits include a writing journal, a book about Why We Stay Home during Covid-19, and other fun art supplies. Students will be encouraged to write about their lives at home. READ MORE >>

Good Food and Friendly Faces - In partnership with the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center which serves the frail elderly of our community, teams of volunteers plan, shop, cook and serve each week approximately 100 warm and nutritious lunches to seniors at an adult daycare center.
A Happy Family - In cooperation with Nurse Family Partnership in Santa Clara County, those in-need moms and their new babies, as identified by the nurses, are provided with a bundle of baby items. Through a point system that the moms earn by meeting specific health care goals, they acquire the ability to “purchase” children’s clothing, toys and other needs. During the holidays, gifts are provided to siblings in families selected by the nurses as most in need.
Warmth and Dry Feet - Based on information from school staff, warm jackets, sweatshirts and school uniforms, along with shoe cards, are provided to in-need students. The program also provides emergency clothes to students on an as-needed basis.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) - Students today need to understand scientific thinking and engineering design to have the best options for success in today’s technological world. Students in kindergarten to 5th grade are introduced to these concepts through literacy, discussion, and interactive projects to create paper helicopters, build strong towers of index cards, design roller coasters, and learn coding skills.
Dictionary Day
What’s a Dictionary - Early in the school year, volunteers present dictionaries, some of which are Spanish-English lexicons, to 3rd grade students. In partnership with the Dictionary Project, volunteers also provide a lesson on how to use the dictionary.
It's Time to Plant a Garden - Now that fall is almost here, it’s time for our Volunteers in the Garden to return to the garden and its many surprises. With the students and teachers back in classes at Monroe Middle School, it’s time to pull weeds and till the soil in the existing planter boxes in preparation for new plants. Our Volunteers in the Garden look forward to providing 4 new classes of 6th graders with the outdoor gardening experience of planting and harvesting while promoting healthy eating for a healthier lifestyle.

Preparing for the Future - With the goal to help students in Kindergarten and 1st grade do better in school, volunteers visit classrooms twice a week during the school year to help students with their reading.
No Books in My House - Once a month, volunteers visit elementary schools to read aloud to students. Quality new and slightly used books are left behind for the students’ classroom library.
