Programs for Children

Operation School Bell® is the signature philanthropic program of Assistance League®. Designed after careful needs assessments, these programs consistently work to improve the lives of the students served. Last year children in Los Gatos, Campbell Union, Moreland, and Luther Burbank School Districts received the following services:

  • 720 primary age students in three local school districts enjoyed volunteers reading quality literature in their classrooms monthly, and each child took home new books of their own to encourage the love of reading
  • 925 third grade students received a new English dictionary, and some families received a Spanish-English lexicon. Volunteers presented a lesson on dictionary use through a partnership with the California Dictionary Project

“I'd like to thank you for the cool dictionary.”

Programs for Families

Working with the Santa Clara County Public Health Nurses at the East Valley Clinic, 600 new mothers and their babies received layette packages including baby quilts, diapers, formula and clothes to help them toward a better start in life. Working with The Family Giving Tree at holiday time, families in need received gifts for children along with gift cards for holiday dinner ingredients.

"Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga is an important organization for East Valley Public Health Nurses.  They are generous to our low income families, not just during the holidays but all throughout the year.  I can see in our clients’ eyes how thankful they are for receiving the layettes, diapers, formula, and grocery gift cards. I am truly grateful to be involved with such a wonderful organization.  I believe that in everything that they do, they do it with their hearts."

Programs for Seniors

In Los Gatos and Saratoga volunteers helped seniors create crafts to take home and enjoy with their families.  Working in partnership with the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center, 29 volunteers planned, cooked, served, and cleaned up hot lunches four days a week for the frail elderly.  A total of 4,800 meals were cooked and enjoyed last year.

"Assistance League has been preparing and serving wonderful meals to the Saratoga Adult Care Center for over 7 years.   They are an incredible group of compassionate, cheerful, and generous women who saw where they could make a difference; and indeed they have!  We are daily thankful for their kindness and commitment."

Kathy’s story……She was 52 when she suffered a stroke requiring her to live in skilled nursing. For 10 years she has attended the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center five days a week. When Assistance League volunteers arrive in the morning laden with food to prepare lunch for the day, Kathy’s first question is always, “What’s for lunch?” She says that the meals prepared by our volunteers are truly the highlight of each day for her.
